What is Astrology ?

Astrology is a word that comes from astro (stars) and logos (language). That's why it's often called the language of the stars.

Astrology is the study of the influence that distant cosmic objects, usually stars and planets, have on human lives. The position of the sun, stars, moon and planets at the time of people's birth is said to shape their personality, affect their romantic relationships and predict their economic fortunes, among other divinations.


Astrology may seem scientific. It uses scientific knowledge about heavenly bodies, as well as scientific sounding tools, like star charts.

Astrology's basic premise is that heavenly bodies - the sun, moon, planets, and constellations - have influence over or are correlated with earthly events.

How It Works

Astrology believes that our lives are influenced, our personalities are shaped, and the future course that our lives will take depends on how the celestial bodies, such as the sun, the moon, the stars and the planets, are placed when we are born.


We are quite used to the type of astrological readings we see in our newspapers every morning. This is the sun sign astrology, and is astrology in its simplest form. Only the date of your birth is required, and you get very limited results through this system. Serious practitioners of astrology do not use this system.


If you want your readings to be more accurate, the astrologer would require the exact time of your birth, to calculate where in the Zodiac each planet was at that time. He also needs to know in which signs of the constellation are the planets positioned. Drawing a precise horoscope is a complex procedure.

The Zodiac sign coming over the horizon at birth is known in astrology as the Rising Sign or Ascendant. The ascendant governs the personality and qualities used to express ones self.


The Ascendant begins the first house of any chart. A chart is divided into 12 parts or houses. The way these houses are divided depends on what method we use. If we use the 'Equal House' system, each of the houses are equal in size. If we use the 'Placidus House' system, which takes into account that we are born on the surface of the planet rather than at the centre, the houses are not divided equally.
